UPDATE: Important E-Resources Access and ILL Change for School of Medicine

by Steve Wilson on 2022-05-05T07:03:00-04:00 | 0 Comments

On Monday May 9, 2022, the University Libraries changed e-resources access authentication providers to Open Athens.  For most University community members this change will be a matter of a new look for the login screen.  For School of Medicine (SOM) faculty, staff, and students however, the change will be more profound, with changes in which Network Accounts to use and to when and where we are challenged to login.

ALL USERS OF LIBRARY RESOURCES WILL BE REQUIRED TO LOGIN REGARDLESS OF LOCATION
As more University Systems move under the Single Sign-On umbrella, so too Library E-Resources and ILL Express will now require University Faculty, Staff, and Students to login with their Network Username and Password regardless of their location on-campus and off-campus.
SOM USERNAME AND PASSWORD WILL NO LONGER BE USED FOR OFF CAMPUS ACCESS
Currently, the SOM community primarily utilizes SOM network credentials for off campus access to SOM Library Resources.  As image shown below, users click the “School of Medicine Columbia Users” link.  And the resulting login prompt accepts SOM credentials, i.e. the same username and password we use to check our SOM email, username@uscmed.sc.edu.  The option to do so will no longer be allowed.

UofSC NETWORK USERNAME AND PASSWORD IS NOW REQUIRED
As of May 9th, all UofSC library access will require UofSC Network Username and Password (again on-campus as well as off-campus).  Many of the SOM community are already familiar with these.   They are the same credentials you use to access University resources such as Blackboard, PeopleSoft, HR/Payroll, and University Email (username@mailbox.sc.edu).
After the switch, the new login screen will appear as below.  To access electronic resources, you’ll need to choose University of South Carolina – Sign in at University of South Carolina.  The resulting login prompt will only accept UofSC Network Username and Password.  Once authenticated, a user session should last 8 hours in the same browser (i.e. you should only need to authenticate once per workday per device/ per browser used).  Closing your browser will end that session however.
