Canva for Academic Presentations and Posters: Getting Started

This guide provides an overview of using Canva, a web-based graphic design program, to create scientific and academic presentations and posters.

Setting Up a Free Account

To set up a free account in Canva:

  1. Go to https://www.canva.com/
  2. Click the "Sign Up" button in the upper right.log in or sign up buttons for Canva
  3. Use your email or other service (such as Google or Facebook) to continue.
  4. Select a user name and password.
  5. Done!

Canva Design School

Canva Design School is a free website offering dozens of self-paced courses for all things Canva-related. Start with the "Canva for Beginners" course to learn everything you need to get started.

Mobile App (Canva On-the-Go)

The Canva app is available for iOs and Android mobile devices. This is handy because you can take your designs with you. Create and edit directly on your phone.

Find the Canva app in the Google play or Apple store:

Selecting a Presentation Template

To get started:

  1. Log into your Canva account.
  2. Click "Create a Design" in the upper right.
  3. Click on Presentation.
  4. Once the presentation workspace loads, search for presentation templates by entering relevant terms in the search bar in the upper left corner.
  5. Scroll through the templates. Click on them to see how many pages they contain.
  6. When you see one you like, click on it, then "Apply all __ pages."
  7. Your presentation workspace will be populated with the pages from the template you selected.
  8. Now simply edit the text and graphics to make it your own!
