What is PASCAL?

The Partnership Among South Carolina Academic Libraries (PASCAL) is a consortium of academic libraries in South Carolina. PASCAL is a strategic initiative launched by South Carolina's public and private academic libraries in conjunction with their parent institutions: the Commission on Higher Education (CHE), the SC Independent Colleges & Universities (SCICU), the Office of State Chief Information Officer, the State Library, and the Department of Archives and History. PASCAL was created to respond to the information-access needs of South Carolinians. Visit PASCAL on the web.

What is PASCAL Delivers?

PASCAL Delivers is a rapid book delivery service for the patrons of all PASCAL member institutions. PASCAL Delivers begins with a single, web-based, unified catalog of library holdings. Library users search the PASCAL Catalog, locate books in any member-library, submit an electronic request for delivery of a book to their home institution, and receive those books within a few days.

What does PASCAL Delivers cost?

The PASCAL Delivers service is free to eligible borrowers at PASCAL libraries. The PASCAL Delivers service receives funding through member dues and from the State-wide Electronic Academic Library.

Who can borrow books using PASCAL Delivers?

Current students, faculty, and staff at PASCAL member-libraries have access to PASCAL Delivers. Through the PASCAL Delivers catalog, books that are not available locally can be requested from other member libraries. Patrons must be "in good standing" at their home library (no overdue books or fines) in order to use the service.

What materials can be found in the PASCAL Delivers catalog?

The PASCAL Delivers catalog is a combined catalog of materials owned by Pascal member-libraries. The catalog includes books, journals and periodicals, audiovisual materials, sound recordings, electronic resources, government documents, archives and manuscripts, maps, and music scores.

How quickly can I get my books? How long can I keep them?

Books are usually delivered within 5-6 business days. Patrons may keep them for up to 6 weeks.

How many books can I get?

Users may have up to 25 active requests in the system at a time.

How do I request a book?

Access the SOM Library Catalog. From there, you have two options:
1. Use the PASCAL Delivers Catalog to start searching for books in the combined catalog; or
2. Perform a search in the SOM Library Catalog, and when you cannot find an item, click on the PASCAL Delivers "pass-through" button at the top of the screen, as in the image below:

Your search will be automatically replicated in the PASCAL Delivers catalog. You may also perform new Title, Author, Subject, or Keyword searches.
Click on the title you want, and then click "Request this Item."
When you are asked "With which institution are you affiliated?" you must select "USC School of Medicine" from the drop-down menu, then click "Submit above information."

After submitting your request, you will receive a confirmation email.
After 5-6 days, you will receive either an email or a phone call informing you that the book is ready to be picked up.
Come to the SOM Library's Circulation desk to pick up the item.
